Raking, bagging leaves and cutting
back flowers. These are just some of the demanding tasks required of
fall clean up that can lead to painful wrists if done improperly.
Tendonitis of the wrist is a common
condition typically caused by repetitive wrist motion and sustained
pinching/pulling. Symptoms generally consist of pain on either side
of the wrist which may include snapping or crackling. Symptoms may
be aggravated with direct pressure on the involved tendon.
Treatment for tendonitis initially
includes wear of a wrist immobilization splint, specific exercises
to maintain mobility of the wrist during this rest period, ice and
joint protection education.
How can you try to avoid developing
tendonitis during your fall clean up? Work smarter using these
suggestions:
- Take breaks frequently during demanding tasks
alternating with easier ones
- Avoiding sustained strong grasp and pinch whenever
possible
- Avoid repetitive bending of wrists and change hand
positions on tools frequently
- Enlarge handles on tools to decrease grasp force
required
- Wear protective gloves as needed
- Most importantly, respect your pain; do no try to work
through it
